  • 2025 — IEEE Taylor Booth Award for contributions to computational science and engineering education, mentoring, and scientific leadership
  • 2021 — SC Test-of-Time Award (Supercomputing Conference) for enduring contributions to graph partitioning
  • 2016 — IEEE Computer Society Sidney Fernbach Award for contributions to the application of high-performance computing to scientific problems
  • 2012 — ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award for fundamental contributions to knowledge discovery and data mining
  • 2005 — IEEE Computer Society Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award for contributions to parallel algorithms, graph partitioning, and data mining

Named Recognition

  • Hopper–Dean Scholarship Honoring Vipin Kumar (2014) — a $500,000 endowed undergraduate scholarship at the University of Minnesota established by Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, who completed his undergraduate honors thesis under Kumar’s supervision.

Student and Mentorship Recognition

Kumar has supervised nearly 50 PhD students, many of whom now hold leadership positions in academia, industry, and government research laboratories. Students supervised by him have also received numerous profession honors including best student paper awards at conferences such as SDM, CIDU, and Supercomputing, and four university-wide doctoral dissertation awards, including three at the University of Minnesota and one at the University of Texas at Austin:
